Well, Mini-Nano is off to a ... lack-luster start for me. I was trying so hard to make a couple things work but nothing was coming. I haven't registered my official total yet but I think it's something like 96 words out of the 150/day I'm aiming for. :(
I have to say that I really liked this episode. Not one of my favourites but I found it interesting and even a little scary. At least the first part. There's something really, really scary about being chased to me. You can show a character getting beaten to death or stabbed or disemboweled or something and that's no problem. Show someone being chased and hiding and and shit and I'm terrified. So the first bit with the "three little pigs" was kinda freaky for me. That's also why "Route 666" freaked me out--don't judge.
I don't know how jazzed I am with the way it was directed and written. I liked the close-up shots and how that kind of harkened to the way that Kim Manners directs but I found some of the reactions a bit... out of character, I guess. One place in particular where there should have been a laugh was when Dean was going to go save "little red riding hood" and he said something along the lines of, "I'm off to hunt the Big Bad Wolf. That's the weirdest thing I've ever said." Jensen just kind of turned away but there wasn't a funny face or any pause or something to focus on the absurdity of that statement because, really, they HAVE said weirder things. I can't think of any off the top of my head but come on now.
I liked the way the episode started out, setting us right into the middle of an arguement between Sam and Dean regarding the Colt, Dean's deal and the Crossroads Demon. It's interesting how we're into the second episode, I think, where Ruby's dome something that Sam's initially wary of but when it comes to Dean he's arguing with him to go ahead with what she's done for them to save him. There was also Sam pointing out that Dean couldn't just order him around like their father did, which I found interesting. Some of me didn't like that part of the scene but the more I think about it and the context it makes me think of Sam rebelling against Dean even more and Dean's attitude/demeanour forcing Sam away instead.
I have to admit, I was a little disappointed not to see Ruby in this episode. I have no idea what it is but Ruby's awesome in my books now. I don't know if it was the addition of Bela to the cast to make me appreciate Ruby (and Katie Cassidy's acting?) a little more but she's A-OK for me now. BUT. I have to say it was nice to see an episode with ONLY the boys for once, the first one of the season. But no Bobby either so. :( I guess we have to make some concessions somewhere.
Little things I noticed in the first part of the episode- their suits are getting A LOT of use this season and I couldn't be happier. It's nice to see them in something with a little colour and have to be presentable, lol. Also, I like how Dean stuck Sam with the title of "artist" again in this episode. The last time we saw that was in "Hookman", I think? When Sam had to paint the frat boy? Either way, Sammy/Jared- don't quit your day job. Although the drawing was precious. The SPN crew should auction that off for charity. Fangirls would pay big money for it!
Dean: "DUDE, COULD YOU BE MORE GAY?"
Mari: HA!
That line and the one about Manchausen by Proxy reminded me of fandom and I kind of took them as quiet shout-outs to fandom in my wee brain. Basically- Sam's gay and don't pseuiside yourself or your sockpuppet, mmmkay? I know they weren't, but still. Funny.
Well, the gay line might have had SOMETHING to do with fandom. *twirls toe in dirt*
The chick who played older coma!girl--was she the one who played Dawson's girlfriend for a few episodes when he was all Hollywood on Dawson's Creek? It looks exactly like her. I wish I looked that good if I was in a coma. Hell, I wish I looked that good right NOW, all alive and awake and shit.
I was spoiled for Sandy's appearance on the show EIGHT MINUTES before the episode was set to air on the East coast by someone on my flist. Colour me un-impressed. But once the fairy tale storyline was resolved I remembered that I knew she was going to be on and was like- was that her in the bed? Nah. And then Sam went to find the Crossroads Demon and tada.
I have to wonder how I would have accepted her as the Crossroads Demon if she wasn't Jared's girlfriend. I was kind of distracted with wondering how they played off each other when they weren't filming or if one of them made funny faces at the other when the camera wasn't on them, trying to make them laugh, and how Sandy got the role in the first place. Did she really auditon or was it just a thing where they needed someone to fill in or was Jared all- Oh, hey. Let's put my gf in a role. I don't know. I found it a little distracting having her there just because I kept thinking of everything about them as ACTORS rather than the characters.
As far as everything that went down... interesting. And she deliberately said "He" for the Crossroad Demon's boss. Also, when Sam shot her did that kill the ACTUAL Crossroads Demon so now no one else will be able to go there or just that PARTICULAR Crossroads Demon. Obviously I know they take different forms but is there only one taking different bodies or are there THAT many Crossroads Demons?
I found Sam shooting her VERY interesting. When he did it I thought of, "I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die" only it was, "I shot a demon at the crossroads just to watch her fry." It's very desperate and darkside. Sam's slipping more and more but I don't know if it's because what Dean brought back wasn't all Sammy. I think at this point he's feeling very betrayed by Dean for making the deal, especially after seeing what Dean went through when their father did it. He's becoming desperate to find a way to save Dean but his brother is preventing him from going too far with it at every step of the way. And now that Ruby has offered to help save him I think maybe in the back of his mind he knows there's got to be a catch. If something seems to good to be true... But Dean means THAT much to him that he'd rather go darkside than see Dean die for HIM. Plus, if Sam does turn evil Dean CAN'T die. Cause then everyone's screwed.
I like the idea of Ruby more and more as someone who's leading Sam down a dark path for her own gain. I like the idea of her wanting to do it to take the place of power beside Sam who's the "boy king". As we learned last week it seems kind of like demons mate for eternity, once they find their... kindred spirit? Whatever. I also have such a kink for the bad person/good person pairing. Buffy/Spike, Claire/Bender, Veronica/Weevil. I don't want to conform them or anything or have them turn GOOD (once they do it's lame) but I like the idea of the bad person falling for the good person, against all their better judgement. And trying to maintain who they are despite having a positive influence over them. I don't know if I explained any of that right. It's part of the charm of evil!Sam and or Dean fic. To have one of them go evil but be so connected to the other that they stick around and torment them or try to get them to do naughty things- it's kinky as hell to me. That's kind of where I see Ruby, I think.
When I think back on it this episode really wasn't the best. It was a little bit of a mess. But the end TOTALLY made up for anything else. I don't care how off an episode can be- if you put anything to do with the mytharc in it I'm going to love it. I'm so anxious to see where Sam's going with all this and the information he has now. Who is the boss of the Crossroads Demon? Where's the research into their mom's friends going? What's Ruby's motive for helping them really? Will Dean ever find out about Sam's research on their mother? What the hell's going to happen once Dean realizes Sam went to the Crossroads Demon and wasted her?

Date: 2007-11-02 06:13 pm (UTC)I'm thinking there's only one Crossroads Demon, like there's only one Yellow-Eyed Demon. But there's nothing to support that yet - could be proven wrong.
It's very desperate and darkside. Sam's slipping more and more but I don't know if it's because what Dean brought back wasn't all Sammy.
Desperation is exactly what I see - I'm not so sure it's Sam going dark side. I really think he's just so desperate, so focused on making sure he saves Dean (and that ticking clock in the background isn't helping things), that he's just willing to do anything.
What the hell's going to happen once Dean realizes Sam went to the Crossroads Demon and wasted her?
*shivers* I wonder when Sam's going to tell Dean? Gonna be awesome to see how Dean reacts ...
