This week went by super fast for me and I'm just as happy for it. This week has been SO warm and since I haven't been feeling the best with everything with my mom and whatnot I'm just as happy for the weekend to come and for today to cool off a bit. I also have a BUTTLOAD of mosquito bites, possibly more than I've ever had before, and oh man they ITCH. Since I moved out here to Alberta I've found that mosquito bites last way longer on me and itch for literally months before they go away. So I've been trying everything and anything to stop from scratching.
I also laid down as soon as I got home and, of course despite mybest lack of efforts, fell asleep for about three hours. But I didn't think I was sleeping. It was weird.
In other news my birthday is next Saturday and I've decided to have a birthday BBQ. That way no one has to spend too much money and I can have people over and it'll be a low-key affair. With the strict stipulation that NO ONE SINGS HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME. I fucking HATE THAT SONG!
It has kind of surprised me how much I have been looking forward to Torchwood coming back. I have gone into it with mixed feelings because TW has never been the BEST show with the most well-rounded characters. It took me a bit of time to even warm up to the show but at this very point I like it betteer than Doctor Who and I do appreciate that it's a show that will go there. I"m still bummed that Tosh, Owen and Ianto have all been killed off but I am thankful that the show doesn't sugar coat anything or shy away from controversy in that respect. The Children of Earth storyline was daring and out there and risky, it was soul crushing, but I liked it and I'm happy with it.
--> It was so painfully obvious in the scenes with the baby that the baby wasn't there. Which I'm okay with but it was VERY PAINFULLY OBVIOUS.
--> Rex's doctor wearing smart business dresses and heels to check on patients. Not once but twice. Yeah, okay. I know this is on Starz (I've never watched anything from that network before I get the sense that they try to be a bit more... pretty, I guess, than others) but that's a bit much for a doctor who's going to be on her feet all day running after patients.
--> Bill PUllman's rapist/murderer character threatening to sue the Governer and getting off during a time of crisis. Again, Starz network and storylines and all, but COME ON. There's no way. There would be a state of emergency called and possibly martial law and I'm SO SURE their top priority would be letting out this dangerous guy who happened to be executed on a day of weirdness.
--> This is a pretty minor thing but Rex's phone staying to his ear when he was prat-falling (Pratt, HA!) getting out of the hospital and all the way to Wales. Also, is Rex supposed to be some sort of comic relief, in a minor way? I found the attempts at humour a bit too forced during this scene and not in the dry TW way I'm used to seeing.
I like Rex, I think, although I wasn't expecting him to take everyone into custody at the end. But it makes sense.
I also like Esther and think she's spunky. She looks like Leslie Bibb. I also really like that friend of hers from the office who got her the Torchwood file on the DL. Although it's a bit convenient that he managed to snag the "last copy" without any hassle and she almost got blown up trying to find loose ends.
I really, really hope more comes out about where Jack's been these last 12 months and how/if he got over the events of COE. I know there's a promise of some pretty rauchy times happening between him and lord knows who else but I hope he and GWen go over what happened with Ianto and whatnot. I also liked how Jack used Owen's name at the examination of the blown up body.
Obviously the show won't be the same old Torchwood but I think after COE it changed anyway and DEFINITELY took a darker turn. If anything I think shifting the tone and the change of locale will give it an edge without being quite so DARK. Because although I really, really enjoyed the COE turn, as I mentiioned, the show can only keep sinking into an abyss before it's too much to handle. But I don't want it to become typical American fare, either, with guns and sensationalism and just TOO MUCH CHEESE. I hope this first episode is the baseline and it won't deviate too much from it because it's still Torchwood, still British and needs to have that sensability about it (yes, totally talking about sensability in a show about aliens).
OH! HOW FUN WAS SEEING RHYS ALL BADASS WITH A GUN?!
