It's like my computer knows I'm starting to search for something new to replace it. It's getting slllooooooowwwwww. It'll be a couple months before I do because I have to wait to have enough in my savings bonds first but I've already kind of picked out what I want. I'm actually going desktop-free, I think, for the first time. I have a laptop but I don't use it more because I HATE making graphics on it. I find the screen is too high contrast and makes everything more vibrant and hard-edged, if that makes sense.

So with the new laptop I'll keep my keyboard and monitor and just dock it so I can work off my monitor. I think that should work out nicely. Then I'll sell the desktop (which is still actually a good system for someone who doesn't use it as heavily as I do) and my laptop which is basically brand new, despite being 4 years old. I don't know how much I'll get out of them since computer systems don't resell as well as they once did but I would imagine I'll make a couple hundred. Hopefully, anyway.

In other news I've just drunk almost a litre of water and want to go right to bed. FFFFFUUUUUU.

Okay, so I sound like this right now, pretty much. Only I'm not as cute and I have to talk on the phone. Yeah. I'm looking forward to a house to myself this weekend so I don't have to say a peep, if I don't want to.

The rest of me feels pretty much okay, although I'm still snotty and coughy, to the point of where I was happy I didn't pee myself at work during a particularly nasty coughing session. And my stomach's still kinda upset which doesn't make eating regular food again as fun as I wish it were.

Every. Fucking. Time. Firefox closes now my journal reverts to horizon (the site default with everything at the top) but I'm a die-hard lover of vertigo (with some of the stuff down the side, but not the old school layout with the blue & orange). I don't know how to correct this and I don't have a cookie deleter or whatever set in my FF so things revert to default so I don't know what the fuck to do. Get used to it or find a solution? With this new computer I've just resigned myself to not liking a shitload of the stuff it's been throwing at me. And I'm kind of okay with that, although I shouldn't be. I think I'm more just content not to get worked up about it.

My thread for [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti is here. I'm offering 20+ icons. Go, bid!

So excited to go to bed tonight! Night!

Um?

Pardon the absence from LJ in the past little bit. I've been sick since last Thursday and have been pretty much just playing games on the computer and coughing up a lung.

I haven't figured out the PS CS3 thing for my computer, either, so I'm using a trial version of CS4, although I got some info that will (in theory) make it a permanent thing. I've tried to call Adobe support about the issue but after sitting on hold for 30+ minutes, then being told to uninstall my AVG to correct the problem, it NOT working and then not being able to REINSTALL AVG I'm a little hesitant to call them back for fear of more things fucking up on my computer.

This is a brand new computer and yet I've already had to do a couple system restores due to the AVG issue, and something about my Catalyst something or other fucking up, which I think was due to me installing a desktop widget it didn't like, I don't know. I'm really liking Windows 7 but I continue to eye the computer warily.

Now, onto the real reason for this post: Finge.

When did they move the eps to Monday?! )

I'm hoping that when I'm back on track health-wise I can get back into the swing of things, especially since my second job isn't working me three days a week anymore but I can't promise anything. My icon-foo is broken (I'm trying but it's not working) and I'm floating in fandom stagnation at the moment.

I started a complete Alias rewatch over the weekend and it's awesome.

GRAG!

Anyone know anything about PS CS3 on Win7?

This person is having the EXACT same problem as I am. Installed the programme, but getting a stupid grey screen and can't do anything.

I have no idea what the fuck to do. I have a legit copy of the CS3 creative suite so I would prefer not to dl anything but if it comes to that I will. Anyone know if CS4 works with no problems? Or how in the FUCK I can make CS2-4 install and work at all?

I'm really liking Windows 7 so far but there have been a couple issues already with my computer (the computer, not win7) that have been hella frustrating. Not to mention that BOTH of my externals have failed so I may have lost all the shit on my main external AND I had to transfer everything from the old computer to the new one with a 4GB flash drive since I fail at networking computers.

So yeah. That's been my last week or so.

OKAY! I need help!

I have successfully done the restore and everything's backed up (as far as I know, anyway!). I had to find a few things that I didn't even know were missing and ANYWAY. Here I am, trying to dl the updates I need for XP (joy) and whatnot but holy shit.

MY MONITOR.

It's a brand new, 17" HP flatscreen. Plug and play. But it/the computer won't let me set the resolution above 1280x720 and this requires 1440x900. The current setting in my display is only 1400x1050 or something, which I can't even set. So now everything is SQUISHED and terrible.

HELP?! I don't know what to do. My computer was built for me so I'm not even 100% sure what to search for as far as drivers so, but I DO have a breakdown of the specs, if anyone can help me out.
summer_skin: (Misc- (random) everyone poops)
Has anyone ever reformatted their own computer? Can anyone lead me to an easy walk through on how to do it? I have a general idea but I'm getting a little freaked out by some things.

I have my XP disc and I'm pretty sure my drivers disc, I'm taking note of all the add ons I have and I'm working on backing up everything onto my external right now. I'm pretty sure I can do this. I think.

My computer's just not running as spryly as it once did, especially when I make caps. I have issues with the quality of them now, not to mention the delays I have when loading things, even Firefox, so I have to try something to make things run a little smoother now.

I could take it to my tech guy but he takes forever. He'd tell it me would only take the weekend and then keep it until Tuesday or Wednesday. So I guess I'll try it on my own and if I fuck up I'll take it to him. That'll be good enough, right?

So, anyone ever done it and could offer me some guidance through it?

If you have the add on Foxmarks on your computer I'd strongly recommend not updating to it right away. I had my computer on for a couple days and had a lot of intensive programmes running so I had to restart to make my computer stop lagging.

When I did I had updates for my add ons, easy peasy. One of them was for Foxmarks that is now going by X Marks or something now.

HOLY SHIT. When I tried to load my tabs after it took forever. The pages never continued to load and wouldn't let me stop it and I couldn't scroll down the page or use my computer without tremendous lag. It adds a "page info" icon to your address bar and then tells you all the links listed on the page or links that are relevant to your interests based on what's on the current page, idek.

Then, when I tried to switch between the two windows I have open it would keep jerking me back to the main one. I couldn't even open my add on window up to uninstall it; it kept minimizing everything else and taking me back to the main window. I had to close FF and do a search for the files on my computer and delete them from there to make it go away.

So, yeah. I don't know if other people have had problems with this add on or not but I wouldn't use it for now or update until the thing starts working or gets exorcised or something. I don't even know why I need it, honestly, since I don't use my laptop THAT much. Everything goes on Delicious, anyway.
summer_skin: (DW- (108) Rose taken off guard)
Does anyone else deal with switching between a laptop and a desktop and find there is a marked difference in the quality of your graphics as a result? Maybe not the quality, but the overall look?

I'm still getting used to working with the laptop. I had to get out my old mouse for it because I just can't function as well using the touch pad and especially not when I have to hold down buttons and scroll and sometimes hit the other button and run over the scroll line I have on the touch pad, etc, etc. So I have a mouse. And that's helped some.

But my laptop is WAY brighter than my desktop. I have a flat screen (not LCD) desktop monitor and a 17" laptop now. The laptop makes all my old icons look washed out and not as vibrant as they do on my desktop. On my desktop the laptop icons are darker than I thought and, also, not quite as vibrant.

How do you reconcile that? Do you just do graphics on one or the other and say bully to the users on the other kind of computer? Do you have tricks you use to get on the same page with both computers (brightening one screen, darkening another, trying to compensate while creating the graphic?) As a viewer do you guys ever take that into account when you look at graphics? I've always considered the quality of someone's monitor when I've been looking at graphics, because I started out with a HORRIBLE monitor that forced me to add like- three screen layers to an icon instead of one to be able to see it, but I never realized how big the difference is between a desktop icon and a laptop.

It's kind of frustrating when I think about it. You can't please everyone but I wonder what the majority of people use to view things online, then.

Also, my desktop is still fucked up, font-wise. Everything is still bolded and italicized. I tried re-installing ff3, which didn't work, and I posted to the FF forums to ask there but my question was ignored. I tried to reset the fonts back to default but I think they already were and it didn't work, either. I think it's something with my computer? Maybe? Because IE is fucked up font-wise, too. I have NO IDEA what happened there.

**Has anyone been watching In Plain Sight? We're a week or so behind the states, I think, and I missed the first episode, I THINK, but I'm watching what I THINK is the second episode and it's pretty good! A little hokey and uneven, and the script is pretending to be tough in a PG-13 way (Mary calls a guy's dick a 'wee wee' when she's trying to bully info out if him), but parts of the main character (Mary) remind me a lot of Veronica from VM. It's kind of like what might have happened if season 4 of the show had been set with Veronica in the FBI, only she's a US Marshall working for witness protection.

**Work kind of sucks right now. If I could work from home it would be amazing. The atmosphere is... not plesant.

**"Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls is totally a Bella/Edward anthem. I re-read "Twilight" last week.

**I've finally started editing my Big Bang. What? I've got a week before I post. *shifts nervously*

**I'm reading "Veronika Decides to Die" right now. I bought it before I knew it was being made into a movie starring Sarah Michelle Gellar Prinze. So far the book is very... it rings true in a lot of ways. It's very insightful and written beautifully. It's short but I usually read on the bus or on breaks so I'm only about half way through right now.

**I found out last night that my laptop came with two remotes. First of all, a remote? Really? and second, TWO? One was in the box when I unpacked the thing and the other one was IN my computer that I just found last night when I was poking around. I haven't really figured out all the features this thing has, LOL.

**I cancelled my membership to zip.ca last night. I watched the second Resident Evil last night but I've had it for a couple months. I've had Syriana since JANUARY and another one for awhile, too, so I figured there was no point in continuing to pay. The selection wasn't the best anyway and you had to wait forever for the movies you really wanted.

**I've been updating my Twitter more. I'm Marishna over there, too, but I have no idea how to do those daily Twitter update summary things that get crossposted to LJ automatically (I think it's automatic?). My feed is here, if you're interested. It's pretty boring so far.

Tired of all the rumors surrounding Torchwood's future, TVGuide.com went directly to the rift, er, Cardiff, Wales, to learn if the truth was out there.

Well, 'Woodies (or Torchies, if you prefer), scripts for Season 3 are currently being developed and filming should start in the middle of August for airing on BBC1 in the spring of 2009. Spoilery for casting, I guess? I don't think anyone would consider it spoilery )

Fans, however, may not be so happy with the mere five hours slated for next season. "We've decided to do a five-part mini-series, one big story that will run during one week," says Gardner, adding, "I wanted to make a really big noise about the show."

So far, the BBC has only green lit these five hours, but there could be more, we're told. When (or even whether) BBC America will run the mini-series has yet to be decided.

Cut for comments on this, only spoilery in relation to the part I cut above )

On the computer front, based on what people have said and the comments I got on my post from a couple days ago, I've backed down from thinking of buying a Dell. I had too many comments complaining about a number of things with their systems and I've never been fussed by their systems in the past, honestly. I've always thought they were overpriced for what they offered, back years ago when computers were still hella expensive.

So I've decided to go with either an HP (possibly refurbished, since I'm not looking to make the laptop my main computer) or a Toshiba and I'll invest in a cooling mat for it, or something. Staples had some on their website that were reasonably (read: cheaply) priced, but they're all sold out right now. I know Staples SUCKS ASS when it comes to CS, but that's okay, if the warranty is only 90 days or something I won't have need for them after that time expires and, hopefully, the computer will last a little longer than 90 days.

I'll be stuck with vista which I'm sort of dreading but at least it's been out for awhile now so SOME of the bugs will be worked out. And I know to get a computer with 2GB of RAM for it to run half-decent. So there we go. I'll probably wait until I can look around the stores around here for whatever but if I have to I'll order from the Future Shop website. And that will be that.
summer_skin: (SPN- (316) Ruby's pensive)
I did a lot of looking last night at some sites and looked for reviews and compared prices on laptops. At this point I'm really looking for price over flair because I'm keeping my desk top for anything big. I want a laptop for convenience, really. I think I'll get myself to bed earlier with a laptop. If that makes ANY sense at all, LOL.

Anyway. I fiddled around on Dell (which I wouldn't normally look at in the least but they still have XP available until June 18th!) and came up with three computers here. They're all the same, basically, and creation goes from bottom to top so each time I went through it I made it cheaper.

I don't know anything about laptops. Nothing. I know brand names are better than no names with laptops and that they're easier to drop. That's about it.

Future Shop has refurbished computers here. [livejournal.com profile] sockherder has had good luck with HP in the past so I was leaning toward one of those but they all have vista and they're refurbished so I don't know exactly what that means. I mean, I get it, but I don't know what sort of quality or shape they're going to be in.

I know Dell does refurbished, as well, but I can't seem to find anything like that on the Canadian site.

Time is sort of of the essence here, as the date on those prices for the Dell computers expires June 12th and they stop carrying XP on the 18th.

Can you share with me your laptop make and models, your laptop stories, your experiences with different brands and, if you know anything about them, if the ones I've linked above are half decent? I don't need it to hack into the Canadian government security system (hahahahahahaha) but I'd like something that in six months I'm not going to throw against a wall in frustration. Although, really, one could argue that that's ANY computer, so...

And now... work. :P

[ETA] 8 hours and all the comments later I should have thrown in that I refuse to go Acer. I have heard good things only from people who sell them and my roomie had one for about a year and a half now, and it's already spazzed out on her twice. I work on Macs all day through my job and I'm not fussed over them. I don't think they're any better than a PC and I'm speaking as a graphic designer, likely the ONLY one who will ever say that. And I know Gateway is the debil.
